first pattern i designed from scratch. I use them for lighters, but you could use it for any small item, like chapsticks!

Instructions

Stem

  • Start: mc + work 6 sc in the center of the mc; sl st top of the first sc; (6)

  • Round 1: ch 2; hdc into same stitch; hdc increase in every stitch; sl st to the top of ch 2 to close in the round; (12)

  • Round 2: ch 1; sc into BOL of every stitch; sl st to the top of ch 1; (12)

  • Round 3: ch 2; hdc into the same stitch; hdc into the next four stitches; on the 5th stitch, hdc increase; hdc in every stitch until end of round; sl st to the top of ch 2; (14)

  • Round 4: ch 2; hdc into BOL of stitch;  sl st to the top of ch 2; (14)

  • Round 5-8: ch 2; hdc into every stitch; sl st top the top of ch 2; (14)

  • Round 9: sl st into the BOL of every stitch; ch 20; save the last ch with a stitch marker; (34)

 

Cap

  • Start: mc + ch 1; 6 hdc in the center of the mc; sl st top of the first hdc; (6)

  • Round 1: ch 3; dc into the same stitch; dc increase in every stitch; ss to the top of ch 3 to close the round; (12) 

  • Round 2: ch 3; dc into the same stitch; [1 dc into the next stitch; increase dc in the next stitch]; repeat until the end of the round; sl st to the top of ch 3 to close the round; (12)

  • Round 3: ch 3; dc into the same stitch; [1 dc into the next two stitches; increase dc in the next stitch]; repeat until the end of the round; sl st the top of ch 3 to close the round; (24)

  • Round 4: ch 3; dc into the same stitch; [1 dc into the next 3 stitches; increase dc in the next stitch - back loops only]; repeat until the end of the round; sl st to the top of ch 3 to close the round; (32)

  • Round 5: sl st in every stitch in the round - back loops only; (32)

 

Finishing:

  • Turn stem and cap inside out
  • Remove stitch marker from stem, and thread tail through a darning needle
  • Take threaded needle, and from the inside of the cap, feed it between two stitches in round 2 of the cap
  • Count 3 stitches away on the cap, and feed the needle back through, so that you end up on the inside
  • Remove needle from chain on stem, and create a slip stitch attaching the end of the chain to the stem, 6~8 stitches away from the beginning of the chain on round 9
  • Add a keychain to the chain once the cap is secured
